January in Review

Article by Sydney Loder

It is safe to say that January started the year off with a bang. I was able to complete seven novels including Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer, The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass, She’s Gone by David Bell, A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J, Maas, The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, and A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas. This past month truly revived my love for reading as all these books were able to capture my heart in their own, unique way. From diving into to poetry to discovering new fantasy realms, each novel provided for a new and lasting adventure.

The first adventure came from Breaking Dawn which, despite my previous feelings on the series, exceeded my expectations. I was excited to see more into the relationships of the other characters and the dual point of view in each part of the book. Meyer’s switch in POV allowed the reader to have a deeper understanding of all parts of the novel. After reading such a large novel, I decided to reign myself in with some poetry by RupI Kaur. The Sun and Her Flowers is an absolutely breathtaking piece of art that is able to perfectly capture the aspects of heartbreak, healing, and the ability to find an inner peace.

Janurary also allowed me to dive into new series like Sarah J. Maas’, A Court of Thorns and Roses. I found that I didn’t really enjoy the first novel in the series as I felt the plot jumped around too much, and it took me a while to actually start enjoying (plus Tamlin sucks). However, I fell in love with the next two novels in the series, A Court of Mist and Fury and A Court of Wings and Ruin. The storylines felt far more cohesive and was, in all honesty, a lot more interesting, The introduction of new characters and settings really opened up the novels and all their possibilities due to the reader being able to see more character development, relationships, and just more of the beautiful world Maas created.

In between reading this series, I dove into She’s Gone by David Bell and The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. She’s Gone was an easy read that had an interesting plot, but sadly a predictable ending. Even with this, I still find myself interested in reading more thrillers by David Bell in the future. Holly Black, however, was able to to provide incredible twists and turns in her novel, The Cruel Prince, which featured a strong female lead finding her way through a land called Elfhame. I absolutely loved how the novel held aspects of sisterhood, romance, fantasy, and politics.

Overall, the month of January was amazing as I was able to discover new worlds and authors. I would absolutely recommend every single one of these books, especially A Court of Mist and Fury, The Sun and Her Flowers, and The Cruel Prince, as they have become new favorites of mine. I hope you have found these reviews to be helpful and would love to hear what novels you discovered in the month of January.
